Standard Broadband is ideal for those that rarely use the internet but check things like online banking, emails, or going on Facebook. If you plan to watch Ultra HD on Netflix you will need at least a 25 Mbps download speed as their recommendation. This is also true for watching Ultra HD live sports as live video requires even more bandwidth in some cases.

Standard Broadband is becoming more and more like Windows 95 as the speeds won’t be able to support heavier bandwidth demands in the future. This is why we recommend getting at least “Fibre” but “Fibre Plus” is an even better solution. Just keep in mind that bandwidth works a bit like math and science where if you use 25 Mbps on a 67 Mbps connection that leaves 42 Mbps for other devices.

Fortunately Ultra HD is the highest user of bandwidth so if you stick to using one Ultra HD television at a time your bandwidth will be sufficient. For reference playing an online game on the PS4 or PS5 uses just 5 Mbps per connection. If you were playing Stardew Valley with your wife on the PS4 then you would collectively be using 10 Mbps.

Just keep in mind that smart devices like Google Home also use 3 Mbps of bandwidth even when not in use. So if you do find you are having slow speeds it is always a good idea to completely power off the devices you’re not using.
